Found this, it’s a neat Dutch healthy-eating pamphlet, circa 1960.  You can really see where the priorities are.  The slices to the wheel are:

Milk, buttermilk, and yogurt

People would do well to use milk or a milk product at every meal.

Potatoes and vegetables and fruit

Make sure that all three appear in the diet every day.

Cheese and meat or fish or eggs or legumes

Use cheese and one or more of the other products every day.

Butter or margarine and cod-liver oil for kids and “a.s. mothers” (not sure what that means)

We should use butter or margarine every day.  The same for…

Brown bread, rye bread or oatmeal, groats, coarse grain products, and buckwheat flour and -meal

Every day at least one of these foods must appear in our meals.

DE SCHIJF VAN VIJF! This wheel is still used by the national center for nutrition (Voedingscentrum). They even have a special recipe site with recipes that adhere to the schijf van vijf. In primary school, we had lessons in which we’d read a recipe and would have to say whether it was a recipe for a balanced, nutritious meal or not. Yeaah.

By the way, a.s. is short for “aanstaande,” which is not really easily translatable, but in this case would translate to “mothers-to-be.”
